This book left me feeling somewhat dissatisfied. It is well written, well researched but develops rather slowly. The storyline is back grounded in the pre Second World War build up and is centered in Berlin. It deals with the insidious dismantling of democracy and some of the characters leading this. The central character is an aspiring actress who has come from England. She is the daughter of an English father and a Mother who was german, The story particularly looks at the hypocrisy of the role women were expected to play and the fashion expectations of a true aryan German wife. There are many glimpses into the behaviors, thoughts and dangers at this time, but these were not really developed in my opinion. As the book finally builds impetus it abruptly finishes. I personally love Berlin and the writer clearly knows it well so the places the characters moved around brought me the most pleasure as I read.Product details

Black Roses (Audible Audio Edition) Jane Thynne Julie Teal Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews
Fascinating look at Germany just before World War Two and the lives of Nazi wives. Ordered from UK ,came quickly and in excellent condition.
Really good character depth (leaving room for a follow-up?). Tense and exciting thriller, well-developed and atmospheric. Great read - difficult to put down. Slight negative on the kindle edition - some spelling errors were a bit of a nuisance. Otherwise - really great read.
For people interested in pre-WW11 events in Germany, Black Roses is a must read. Set in Berlin, the story provides significant insight into events in pre-war Germany, with fact and fiction neatly interwoven. Essentially a woman's book, but with plenty of intrigue and danger.
A good description of life in Berlin in 1933
for me, this story was a little slow to start up...had a little difficulty deciding who the true main characters were going to be. But I'm very glad I stuck with it past those first couple of chapters, as the story is truly engaging and intriguing. It's easy to identify with the main character, Clara, who arrives in Germany for her own reasons and certainly not expecting to be caught up in historical events--in that sense, it's easy to adopt her character as she enters this new, dark world. Clara's story is intertwined quite believably not only with the historical events and people but also with the more typical experience of a person on the street. And it really isn't clear how her story will go--I'm suspecting there's room for a sequel but this was quite satisfying on its own.
I'm on a rolll with this series. Love them enough to read them all.
Well written novel given insight into pre wat agermany.
